Note From the Artist:

During the Renaissance,  artists were supported by a patron, the Church,  State/Monarch, or wealthy merchants.  The patron would support the artist and his apprentices with great commissions that are today considered national treasures.  Today,  it is possible for an artist to submit applications for grants to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA);  however,  I have never applied for a NEA grant nor would I even know how to begin the application process.  (For background information on my art career,  go to About the Artist)

The Aging in America project is funded by individuals,  companies and organizations who agree that we must change our collective attitudes concerning older Americans.  The sponsors of the original drawings have allowed me to maintain control of the work for ongoing exhibitions throughout the nation (see exhibitions_and_uses_of_project.htm).  The original drawings are also reproduced as limited edition reproductions (commonly referred to as prints).  The "prints" serve a number of purposes.  The prints make it economically feasible to spend the long hours required to produce the original drawings.  They also allow greater exposure for each drawing by making it possible for more people to possess the art work at a small fraction of the fees of the original drawings.  The "prints" allow all to join in the support of the AIA project.  Without the  income generated from these "prints",  this project would not be possible.

In all its forms this drawing series is created to educate the general public and elected officials through the images of models selected from across the nation.  Focusing on a few bit representing all,  the drawings depict the humanity and dignity of older Americans while drawing attention to the positive contributions of this segment of American society.  To say the least,  without my sponsors, these images would not have been created nor would the Legislative,  public and school exhibitions have been held.  This is a major undertaking which consumes all my energy,  skills and time to produce and exhibit.

Art is like a signpost meant to guide the mind of the viewer to the destination,  the reality which lies beyond.   In a general sense,  the art work is not the message,  it is the messenger.  The merit of this drawing series is in its demonstrated ability to increase public awareness of the humanity and dignity of all older Americans and to bring their concerns to the general public and Legislators throughout the nation;  however,  as with any major art project,  it can not be accomplished without patrons,  the sponsors of the project and this web site.

In this regard,  you are invited to participate with me in the creation and exposure of the only national art project in America dedicated to honoring America's aging citizens and bringing their concerns to public attention.  Your participation will serve to educate elected officials,  the general public and students in an ongoing effort to change public and private attitudes toward this segment of society.   If you feel, as I do,   that this project is worthy of support,  you are invited to become a 'Sponsor."  If sponsorship is not a viable option, you may select one or more individual prints.  In either case,  tell your friends and  your elected officials to take a look at this web site.  Your support on all levels will insure the continuation of the production and exposure of this project.

Thank You,

Jim Branscum,  Artist
Aging in America

                                           AIA Project Contents:

Original Art:

The completed Aging in America- Our Heritage of Wisdom project will consist of thirty-six,  museum quality pencil drawings of America's older citizens accompanied by a brief historical commentary of each subject written by the artist as each drawing is completed.  Most of the subjects depicted in this series are 80 years old or older and are selected with consideration for diversity of occupation,  gender, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.

The series of thirty-six pencil drawings will contain the following:

             Twelve (12) pencil drawings 17'' X 23'' with fully rendered foreground,  subject and background;
Twenty-four (24) pencil drawings 11'' X 17'' with subject fully rendered with a tonal background

NOTE:  All original drawings for the series were all commissioned soon after the first public announcement of the project's creation;   however,  two of the 11'' X 17'' drawings are available on the secondary market.  For further information on these two drawings,  contact the artist,   Jim Branscum, at jimbran@aginginamerica.com

Reproductive Art:

To maximize public exposure of the Aging in America project and to reward the project's sponsors,   collectable art works will be produced utilizing fine art reproductions of the original drawings as follows:

Limited/Edition Signed & Numbered Prints: (offset reproductions)

The limited edition prints are created with the reproduction standards listed below and are individually signed with the artist's signature,  title and are numbered 1/300,  2/300,  3/300,   etc.

              Edition Size: 300 Signed & Numbered (S/N)
30 Artist Proof (signed and marked A/P)

Reproduced "One to One" (same size as the original drawings)

pH balanced acid free 80 lb.  paper

200 line per inch "fine art" screen reproductions

Signed Only (S/O) Prints: (offset reproductions)

An affordable Signed/Only print edition has been created to satisfy a growing interest in support for the AIA project.   The S/O prints  are created with the same reproduction standards listed for the production of the S/N "prints," but have the title,  artist's signature and are marked S/O.

Books:

At the completion of the series,   the original drawings will be published in book form.  As with the prints listed above,  the book will be published in two editions;  a leather-bound collector's edition (Signed & Numbered,  Limited/Edition of 300 + 30 Artist Proofs) and in a soft-cover edition.  Both book editions will include reduced images of all Aging in America original drawings and historical commentaries on each of the models included in the series. In addition,  the books will include information on health and other issues of concern to older Americans.

           Leather-Bound Edition:
The leather-bound book edition is reserved for AIA Project Sponsors and will not be made available for              individual purchase.   These books are reserved for AIA project sponsors.

            Soft-Cover Edition:
The soft-cover book edition will be available for individual purchase.  The purpose of producing the soft-cover edition is to increase the exposure of the project by providing an affordable means to enjoy and share the Aging in America art work.
